About the BFA in Interaction Design
Our work is invisible but, interaction design is all around us.
Interaction designers (also known as Experience Designers, User Experience Designers, Digital Product Designers) are responsible for creating and designing the technology you are familiar with and the things you carry every day such as your smartphone, tablet or laptop.
We design the social media, software, web and mobile experiences you probably use like Facebook, and technology super tools like Google, and software like Photoshop.
An interaction designer has had a hand in creating the products and services that are in stores, restaurants, ecommerce, online content, medical centers, schools, your home and increasingly places you might not have thought, like the government and industry. We design the connected products and services that power your thermostat, the checkout process at your local store, the dashboard of vehicles and the ride sharing apps that you hailed.
The work we do is invisible but it is powerful and impactful, and operates at a massive scale.
Our program approach:
We embrace the future with a humanistic approach - Our students and faculty are always looking towards the future, we aim to make a positive impact on the world and we have fun doing it. We know technology has changed the world and operates at a massive scale. We want to influence and help inform creating a future that uses technology in way that is equitable and sustainable for everyone, everywhere in the world.
We are system thinkers - Our faculty are highly experienced and work on complex ecosystems. We know technology, business, policy and culture are intricately enmeshed and we pass this understanding on to our students.
We are intrepid - We try new things, from exploring tech trends to thinking about how to use technology for different contexts. We are design thinkers and design doers.
We are responsible - We know the design fictions we create become realities. These systems have real consequences to others. We know technology is a powerful tool, so we must use it responsibly. So, we strive to be ethical in word and deed.
Imagine studying interaction design in a creative and innovative community at one of the best art and design schools in the world.
California College of the Arts is located in the Bay Area of Northern California, where many of the leading technology companies are headquartered: Apple, Intel, IDEO, Nokia, YouTube, Google, Facebook, among others.
We are literally positioned in a technology and design hub. As such, we provide our Interaction Design students with a rich academic environment -- and one that connects students to unique opportunities that foster their professional training.
Graduates from our program have moved on to work at some of the top technology, design companies and are making a big impact on design and culture.
